Scenic Flights at Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei – Deadvlei Scenic Flight

Duration: Approximately 40 minutes
Highlights: Sesriem Canyon – Dune 45 – Deadvlei – Sossusvlei – Elim Dune

Route Overview:
From Sesriem Canyon, the flight heads southwest into the dune corridor, passing by Dune 45, one of the most photographed dunes in the world.

After taking off from the Sossusvlei Lodge Airstrip, the aircraft makes a left-hand turn towards Sesriem Canyon, offering stunning aerial views of the gorge below.

Continuing towards Deadvlei, guests will spot Hiddenvlei, Cessna Pan, and the striking White Mountains along the way. The aircraft performs a slow turnaround over Deadvlei, famous for its ancient, dead camelthorn trees — a perfect opportunity for breathtaking photographs.

From Deadvlei, the flight proceeds to Sossusvlei, circling the area before heading to Elim Dune. Along this route, guests can admire the Fairy Circles scattered across the grass plains, with the chance to spot wildlife such as oryx, springbok, and ostrich. After turning over Elim Dune, the aircraft returns to the Sossusvlei Lodge Airstrip, concluding this unforgettable aerial journey.

Sossusvlei – Langewand Scenic Flight

Duration: Approximately 1 hour and 6 minutes
Highlights: Sesriem Canyon – Dune 45 – Deadvlei – Sossusvlei – Black Rock – Meob Bay (Langewand) – Elim Dune

Route Overview:
Departing from the Sossusvlei Lodge Airstrip, the aircraft makes a left-hand turn toward Sesriem Canyon, offering spectacular views of the gorge before heading southwest into the dune corridor. Here, the aircraft flies over Dune 45, one of Namibia’s most iconic landmarks.

En route to Deadvlei, guests can admire Hiddenvlei, Cessna Pan, and the striking White Mountains. The aircraft passes over Deadvlei, providing exceptional photographic opportunities of the ancient camelthorn trees, before continuing to Sossusvlei for another flyover en route to the coast.

Descending toward the Atlantic coastline, guests witness thedramatic meeting of desert and ocean. Flying north along theshore for about 10–15 minutes, the flight reveals the vast sweepof Langewand, where towering dunes plunge directly into thesea — a striking landscape alive with bird colonies and endless contrasts.

From there, the aircraft turns inland toward Elim Dune, flying over the famous Fairy Circles and open grass plains, with a chance to spot oryx, springbok, and ostrich. After turning over Elim Dune, the flight returns to the Sossusvlei Lodge Airstrip, completing this unforgettable desert-to-sea journey.

Sossusvlei – Shipwreck Scenic Flight

Duration: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes
Highlights: Conception Bay - Seal Colony - Eduard Bohlen - Diamond Miners’ Camps - Sossusvlei - Sesriem Canyon

Route Overview:
After taking off from the Sossusvlei Lodge Airstrip, the aircraft makes a left-hand turn, flying around the nearby mountain before proceeding towards Sesriem Canyon, offering a stunning aerial view of the gorge.

Routing from Sesriem Canyon, the aircraft flies southwest to enter the Dune Corridor. Once in the corridor, the aircraft flies over Dune 45, famous for being the most photographed dune in Namibia.

From Dune 45, en route to Deadvlei, guests can see Hiddenvlei,Cessna Pan, and the striking White Mountains. The aircraft passes over Deadvlei, renowned for its dead camelthorn trees, allowing for spectacular photographic opportunities. From Deadvlei, the aircraft continues to Sossusvlei, flying over the area before setting course towards the coast.

The aircraft then flies in a north westerly direction to the diamond camps, descending to pass over the southern, middle, and northern camps respectively.Continuing westward toward the coast in descent, guests can admire the vast salt pans to the left and several seal colonies along the way to the Eduard Bohlen shipwreck, lying approximately 400 meters inland from the coastline. From the Eduard Bohlen, the aircraft routes back inland toward Elim Dune. At this point, the aircraft ascends as the ground level rises, offering a close-up view of the dunes. En route to Elim Dune, guests can fly over the famous Fairy Circles scattered across the grassy plains, with the possibility of seeing oryx, springbok, and ostrich. After turning over Elim Dune, the aircraft returns to the airstrip for landing.

Please note: We do not have any fixed scheduled times for all our scenic flights, however we are sure to schedule them for the best time of the day. All flights to the coast (Route 2 & 3 ) we suggest to be done in the late afternoon for sunset. The Route 1 can either be done early morning shortly after sunrise or late afternoon just before sunset.

Twyfelfontein - Doros Crater Scenic Flight

Route Overview:
After taking off from Twyfelfontein Country Lodge, the scenic flight heads towards the remarkable Doros Crater, revealing the dramatic landscapes of Damaraland from above. Along the way, guests may spot the unfinished lodge ruins slowly being reclaimed by the desert — a striking reminder of the power and stillness of the Namibian wilderness.

From the Doros Crater, an ancient volcanic ring structure, the flight continues towards the Gai-As Fountain before passing over a mountain known among our pilots as “Elephant Skin Mountain”, named for the remarkable textures and patterns of the landscape below.

The final highlight of the flight is the De Riet Settlement, home to the Riemvasmaker community, offering a glimpse into one of Namibia’s remote and historic settlements. From there, the aircraft returns to the Twyfelfontein Country Lodge airstrip, completing an unforgettable scenic flight over one of Namibia’s most unique landscapes.

Twyfelfontein – Ugab River Scenic Flight

Highlights: Twyfelfontein – Doros Crater – Messum Crater – Fukuseki Maru Shipwreck – Ugab River – Gai-As

Route Overview:

 After departing from the Twyfelfontein Country Lodge Airstrip, the scenic flight heads towards the remarkable Doros Crater, an ancient volcanic ring structure set within the dramatic landscapes of Damaraland. Along the way, guests pass over unfinished lodge ruins slowly being reclaimed by the desert.

From there, the journey continues to the Messum Crater, a vast collapsed volcanic caldera surrounded by fascinating geological formations. Guests may spot ancient Welwitschia plants and the mysterious Damaraland fairy circles scattered across the terrain below. Hidden amongst the Messum formations lies a remarkable ridge that strikingly resembles piano keys when viewed from above.

The flight then heads west towards Namibia’s rugged Skeleton Coast, where the Fukuseki Maru Shipwreck comes into view. Continuing north along the coastline, guests can also spot the remains of the Winston Shipwreck, now largely reclaimed by the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding desert.

From there, the aircraft follows the coastline north towards the Ugab River Mouth before turning inland to trace the winding Ugab River towards the Gai-As Fountain. After this final highlight, the flight returns to the Twyfelfontein Country Lodge Airstrip, completing an unforgettable scenic flight over one of Namibia’s most remote and extraordinary landscapes.

Twyfelfontein – Toscanini Scenic Flight
