Commercial Pilot License Training

A Commercial Pilot License (CPL) allows you to turn your passion for flying into a profession. It is the qualification that legally permits you to earn an income as a pilot, flying passengers or cargo in the commercial aviation environment.

Whether your goal is charter flying, airline operations, or achieving a personal aviation milestone, we provide structured, hands-on training that produces confident, employable commercial pilots with a clear Namibia industry edge.

Minimum Requirements to Start Your CPL Training

To enroll for Commercial Pilot License (CPL) training at Desert Aviation Academy, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

Be at least 18 years of age

Hold a valid Private Pilot License (PPL)

Possess a valid Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate

English Language Proficiency Level 5

CPL Training Structure

CPL training consists of two core components:

Theoretical Knowledge Training

Practical Flight Training

Both components must be successfully completed in accordance with Namibia Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) regulations.

Theoretical CPL Training

Before progressing to the final stages of flight training, students are required to complete and pass all prescribed CPL theoretical examinations.

Required Subjects include:

Human Performance – How the body and mind react to the aviation environment
Air Law & Procedures – The legal framework governing aviation operations
Meteorology – Weather theory and its impact on flight
Aircraft Technical & General – Aircraft systems, engines, and aerodynamics
Flight Planning & Performance – Performance calculations, mass and balance, fuel and route planning
Radio Aids & Communication – Navigation aids and communication systems
Navigation & Plotting – Chart work, headings, distances, and visual navigation
Instruments & Electronics – Aircraft instruments and electronic systems
General Radiotelephony – Professional aviation radio communication

Practical Flight Training

To qualify for a Commercial Pilot Licence under NCAA regulations, students must log a minimum of 200 total flight hours, which typically include:

Minimum 100 hours Pilot-in-Command (PIC)

Instrument Flight Training

Complex Aircraft

CPL Test

After completing all theoretical examinations and practical flight requirements, students must pass a CPL Skills Test.

Successful completion of this test is the final step toward obtaining your Commercial Pilot License.

As part of our CPL training, we prepare and equip students for interviews with potential aviation employers, supporting their transition into professional flying.

License Validation and/or Conversion of a Foreign License

Are you the holder of a foreign pilot license and wish to operate a Namibian-registered aircraft?

Desert Aviation Academy offers professional assistance with the validation of foreign pilot licenses and ratings in accordance with Namibia
Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) regulations. Before any flying may take place, pilots are required to apply to the NCAA for a validation and/or
conversion of their foreign license or rating.

We guide applicants through the full validation process, which typically includes:

Application to the NCAA for licence and/or rating validation
Air Law examination at the applicable licence level (PPL or CPL), as prescribed by the Authority
A 1.5–2 hour Namibian Air Law and operations briefing, including airspace, terminology, and density altitude considerations
Flight training, typically 3–6 hours, depending on licence level, aircraft type, and prior experience
A practical skills test conducted by a Designated Flight Examiner appointed by the NCAA

Validations may be issued for purposes such as private or commercial operations, ferry flights, demonstration flights, familiarisation or difference training, and temporary commercial operations, subject to NCAA approval and licence equivalency.

All validations are issued at the discretion of the Executive Director of the NCAA, are subject to conditions and limitations, and are generally valid for up to 12 months, depending on licence, medical, and employment status.

Our team ensures that all required documentation, training, and testing are completed efficiently and in full compliance with NAM-CATS-FCL 61, allowing foreign pilots to operate legally and confidently within Namibia.
